Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for several hours when multiple of them drifted across the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations impacting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and near the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and participants so that this activity become not financially viable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Parallel situations in nearby states have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
