As any major awards ceremony nears, there’s always an outcry for the addition additional classifications to honor underappreciated efforts and delight the spirits of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.
Another commentator previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, which is a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist when I prioritize just as with other blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification for why my demand remains most pressing and important of all. This is the request: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and typically start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that movie academies avoid this approach. Yet it remains an essential concession within the realm of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.
Present Award Structure
The major gaming awards offer these genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types effectively encompass a lot of ground, making space possible for numerous titles.
This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Consider three of this year’s best games, all very different: building puzzles in a particular game, intense tile-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.
Recognition Challenges
There are dozens excellent brain-teasers launched regularly that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.
- An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition for anything in 2014
- Another imaginative release received no nominations in 2019
- A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment recently
- Only a few puzzle games managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories
Value of Brain-Teasers
These are often compact experiences, yet the craft in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among the most-played games in the world and have been for an extended period.
The legendary block-stacking game competes with popular creative games competing to become highest-selling title ever; it also contends as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and engaging with diverse game types.
Proposal and Rationale
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. You could fill five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.
To emphasize again, these represent titles without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators function at the demanding boundary game development, producing among most fundamental forms of the video game form. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay generations.
