Federal Reserve Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year During Financial Instability

The US monetary authority lowered interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut in the current year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release reads. “Price increases has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve typically studies labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs added to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in early September, prior to the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The figure of jobs created to the market in August was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.

Private Data Show Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was set to release September’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its publication when the closure started. Employment data company ADP indicated recently that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated recently, which he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are going up, although slowly. Prices rose 3% over the last year, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
